Cytomel medication before thyroid scan

Cytomel medication before thyroid scan

Postby Jen1000 » Fri May 14, 2010 8:27 pm

I am getting ready for my yearly thyroid scan and the doctor put me on cytomel 25 mcg twice per day prior to my scan. I was to stop my levothyroxine and start cytomel for 4 weeks. My doctor said cytomel is a short acting thyroid medications and levothyroxine is a long acting medication. So in theory I am suppose to use this short acting medication for one month in order to get all the long acting levothyroxine cleared out. Then I will stop all my medications for one week and get lab work, "stimulated thyroglobulin," and the radioactive iodine scan. This protocol is new for me. I typically just stopped my levothyroxine for two weeks and did all the testing. I have a few questions.

Is anyone else using this cytomel protocol before testing?

Does this cytomel protocol help decrease the degree of fatigue and tiredness?

Any info is much appreciated :)

I'm going through the same thing right now. Just got switch to cytomel for the scan. Seems like a new thing endocrinologist are doing. I'm not to excited about this. I'd rather have the thyrogen shot like I did last time. We'll see how it goes. I'm going to ask around to see what others are going through.
