Tube in neck!

Tube in neck!

Postby KerryBaby » Fri Jul 03, 2009 3:54 am

No one told me I was going to have a tube in my neck after surgery! I woke up to this little tube that drains out fluid from where the surgery incision was made. Gross! They took the tube out a few days after surgery. So now you are warned.

Thanks! I had heard about this, but now that I think of it, I learned on my own - my surgeon hasn't really said anything about it yet. (I am having my surgery on July 30th.) I've also done Flickr searches for "thyroid surgery" which come up with an impressive variety of incision styles & sizes..... :?
It was educational (as long as one keeps an open mind and realizes results do vary!) but I would highly recommended against doing this search at night right before going to bed! Wait til it's sunny outside and/or you can distract yourself with happier images.

Minimally invasive thyroid surgery = small incision = no tube

Classic thyroid surgery = large incision = tube

Yea I had a leakage tube for my surgery (happened a few days ago on the 8th) - but I was so drugged up when I saw it in recovery it didn't even gross me out! My family, however, were totally grossed out when they saw it. Which, naturally, I found to be hilarious and kept making them look at it.

I didn't have anything described as "minimally invasive" thyroid surgery, and I stayed overnight at the hospital, but my incision was a very undramatic 2" (and I'm told it'll disappear soon) and I didn't have a tube in my neck.

So my point is, I think there are a variety of procedures out there. Just ask for details ahead of time, to reduce surprises.
