I had my thyroidectomy about 1 week ago. The 1 cm nodule was right in front of/resting upon the left laryngeal nerve. The cancer had spread to the nerve and the surgeon had to shave the cancerous tissue from the nerve. I am still hoarse, but it comes and goes. My doctor assures me my voice should return to normal. I hope he's right. I guess I have to be patient.
He said I was lucky to be able to produce sound (and not sound airy all the time) considering he had to perform surgery on the nerve. And, I was lucky they caught the cancer early (it was found by accident). Otherwise, I would have lost my ability to speak.
