Thyroid nodule on ultrasound

I had an ultrasound for a small bump on my neck. Ultrasound was easy but the bump turned out to be a thyroid nodule. Doctor said these are very common at my age (55 years old) and there was only a 5% chance of cancer. The doctor just wants to watch it for awhile. I want to have surgery and get my thyroid taken out! The thought of cancer freaks me out.

A second opinion would be a good idea. I had one and I'm glad I did. My thyroid nodule turned out to be papillary cancer so I would definitely have it checked out.

Find a good endocrinologist and get his opinion. He'll probably want to do a FNA (needle biopsy). With the increasing rate of thyroid cancer I wouldn't just watch it. Sometimes one really has to take control of their own health....you are your best advocate!

A biopsy seems like a good idea.
